The Centered Professional: Why Your Internal State Matters More Than You Think
Having spent two decades as a litigator, including time in family law, I saw firsthand how emotionally demanding the divorce process can be - for everyone involved.
Not just for the individuals going through it, but for the professionals guiding them.
In spaces like mediation and collaborative divorce, we’re not just working with facts - we often absorb the emotions of our clients.
Their fear. Uncertainty. Grief.
At the same time, we’re navigating our own internal sensations, thoughts, and emotions. And alongside that, we’re working long hours - resolving complex issues and fielding a constant stream of calls and emails.
It’s no surprise this can leave us feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.
And when we’re operating in a state of reactivity, it doesn’t just affect us. It affects the entire room and what becomes possible.
In fact, this is something I see reflected again and again in the legal profession. In a recent poll I shared on LinkedIn, I asked a simple question: What makes legal practice mentally exhausting?
Seventy percent of respondents answered: “Never fully switching off.”
That constant state of being “on” takes a toll - not just on our well-being, but on how we show up in the moments that matter most.
Why This Matters (For You and Your Clients)
This is something I recently explored on the Conscious Corner Podcast with Courtney in a conversation with Melissa Murphy Pavone, CFP®, CDFA®, a Certified Financial Planner and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst who serves as a financial neutral in the collaborative process.
What makes Melissa’s work so impactful is that she integrates mindfulness not only into how she supports her clients, but also into how she supports herself in the midst of this high-stress, emotionally demanding work.
In a process that is both emotionally and financially complex, it’s not uncommon for clients to experience a stress response, especially when faced with uncertainty and high-stakes decisions.
When people are in fight, flight, or freeze, they contract. They lose access to clarity, perspective, and possibility.
And the quality of our presence shapes the quality of the process.
When we take care of our internal state, we don’t just feel better - we create the conditions for better outcomes for everyone involved. Because if we are not in a centered space, the process itself can begin to break down.
Mindfulness tools help us step out of reactivity, recharge, and recenter. And when we feel more calm, we’re better able to support our clients.
And when our clients feel supported, grounded, and regulated, everything shifts.
They’re able to think more clearly, communicate more effectively, and make decisions that reflect not just fear, but intention.
And that doesn’t just benefit the client. It supports the entire professional team, as well as the outcomes you’re working toward together.

Melissa's New Book
I’m also excited to share that Melissa will soon be releasing her book, Divorce by Design, inspired by years of real client experiences and the powerful impact of having the right team in place during divorce.
Her work emphasizes that this process doesn’t have to be chaotic or financially devastating. With the right support, and a mindful approach, it can be navigated with clarity, strategy, and intention.
If you’d like to stay updated on the book release and her upcoming launch, I encourage you to follow Melissa on LinkedIn.
