🌱 Supporting the Pandemic-Era Law Students: A Mindfulness Initiative

The law students stepping into summer associate roles this year have weathered a very particular kind of storm.

Many of them spent a formative stretch of college learning remotely during the pandemic β€” navigating lockdowns, social isolation, and a lack of in-person connection. And then, just as the world was reopening, they entered law school β€” an environment that’s already high-pressure, competitive, and, for many, deeply isolating.

The result? A generation of aspiring lawyers who are more anxious, more disconnected, and more at risk of burnout than ever before.

Recent studies confirm this shift:

πŸ‘‰ In a 2022 survey of over 1,000 law students, 77% reported experiencing anxiety, 71% reported disrupted sleep, and 51% reported depression β€” all tied to law school-related stress.

πŸ‘‰ Diagnoses of anxiety and depression among law students have nearly doubled in recent years, and the number of students reporting suicidal thoughts has nearly doubled since 2014.

πŸ‘‰ And it doesn't stop after graduation β€” one in five BigLaw associates report feeling emotionally depleted by work, while one in four say they lack the energy to focus on what matters by week’s end.

This is the landscape today’s legal employers are stepping into.

That’s why this summer, I’m offering a 4-week virtual mindfulness program designed specifically to support summer interns, clerks, and associates β€” not just as budding professionals, but as human beings.

Each 45-minute session combines formal mindfulness practice with short, practical tools participants can use in the flow of their workday. In addition, there are opportunities for small group breakout discussions, optional 1:1 check-ins with me, and a dedicated Slack channel to foster peer connection between sessions.

It’s a powerful way for legal employers to say:

β€œWe care about your mental health β€” not just your output.”

Participants leave the program feeling more centered, more confident, and more supported β€” by their peers and their workplace.

If your firm or organization wants to meaningfully support its summer cohort this year, I’d love to talk.
